La Mama Theatre

La Mama Theatre

Continuing its influence on Melbourne’s progressive arts and theatre culture, the La Mama Theatre rebuild is a story of survival and triumph in itself.

The La Mama Theatre has long been acknowledged as the grassroots support for the development of contemporary theatre in Victoria – an iconic and longstanding independent playhouse that boasts alumni including Cate Blanchett, Julia Zemiro and Judith Lucy.

It has continually fostered, nurtured and encouraged writers, actors and directors in its 50+ year history and stands as the pivotal beacon of trust for all theatre creatives to hone their skills and find their uniqueness. The theatre tragically burnt down on 19 May 2018 and the effect was devastating for the local Carlton community, breaking a continuous history of contemporary theatre that started in 1967.

Our design team partnered with Architect Meg White, a former member of our Melbourne studio, to rebuild the venue. In collaboration with Meg, the founders of the theatre, and the consultant team, we worked with Melbourne City Council and Heritage Victoria to document the restoration works, including the new rehearsal and administrative spaces for the Development Application and for tendering of the works. Thereafter, CPA took the role of Superintendent, administering the contract through DLP to final completion.

“Like old La Mama, the design of new
La Mama is simple and restrained. Ornamentation only resides in the elements that are engaged with: the doors, windows and shutters. The theatre is in the every-day. The architecture aims to respect and support the multitude of daily activities of this little village. The design desires to speak to La Mama’s philosophical stance of being open; open to all."
