Sunshine Coast City Hall

Sunshine Coast City Hall

Sunshine Coast City Hall establishes a new benchmark for building design regionally through transparency of built form, façade activation and environmental sustainability. It is the physical embodiment of the vision, values and goals of the region.

The Sunshine Coast City Council challenges the notion of the traditional ‘Town Hall’ concept, providing a high level of physical access and engagement to the residents and visitors of the region through the creation of the ‘City Hall of Tomorrow’.

The projects vision sought to address key characteristics, including strong governance, healthy work environment, economic opportunities, sub-tropical design, community connectivity, iconic form, sustainability and value for money. The development consolidates council’s operations into one central building, a catalyst for workplace efficiency. The Sunshine Coast Council’s commercial environment was previously located in three locations, including Nabour, Caloundra and Maroochydore; each with distinct identities. The development consolidates council’s operations into one central building, a catalyst for workplace efficiency.

The spirit of the landscape is engrained into the conceptual design of the building. It acknowledges and reinforces the natural assets of the region which is prides itself on and are highly significant for local Traditional Owners, the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi people.

The vision for Sunshine Coast City Hall is to create a built form of enduring beauty and civic significance that represents the region and its climate. As Maroochydore matures into a dense urban hub, Sunshine Coast Regional Council knew that City Hall had to realise a new benchmark for the development of the SunCentral CBD and create a captivating moment for its urban revitaliation.

The region spans over 2,200 square kilometres and is renowned for its natural assets; beaches, rocky mountains and hinterland rainforests. The prominent and cultural significant landscape setting of the Glass House Mountains is defining for the region. First and foremost, these mountains are highly significant for local Traditional Owners, the Jinibara people and Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) people.

The conceptual framework for the design captures the reverence and importance of the landscape, honouring the qualities of the landscape, its responsive approach and climatic environments which define Sunshine Coast Region.
