The Step Up, Step Down (SUSDU) units in Bundaberg is a 745m² single storey building for Queensland Government’s Department of Health which provides private accommodation and support for up to 10 adults affected by mental illness.
The primary focus for this development was to create an environment that was safe and supportive. Designed to feel like a large-scale house, the building is located within the residential area of Bundaberg. This proposed many challenges including passive surveillance and the need for durable and anti-ligature design.
To provide the most comprehensive support, the building was also designed to accommodate people with disabilities and bariatric requirements. The design team worked to provide design solutions and source products that fit this unique brief and would remain durable, anti-ligature and residential in feel.
