Parkside Plaza recently won the 2018 Property Council of Australia’s Queensland Retail Property of the Year Award for Design Excellence in the Neighbourhood Centre category.
The Plaza completed in August 2015, is the focal point of a masterplan produced by Cottee Parker Architects, incorporating, multi-residential, affordable housing and retail development.
The developer (Parkside Group) has has an association with the site for half a century, previously operating a sawmill from the property. Located on a nodal point at the intersection of Mackay’s Cross City Green Link and The Blue Water Trail, Parkside Plaza is part of the urban renewal of the old Parkside Sawmill site within the predominantly residential West Mackay.
The entire site was master planned to promote a mixture of uses. As well as the supermarket and retail use, food & beverage offerings and the medical centre, the site was planned to offer a fringe of affordable, small-lot housing sites to reinforce the adjoining residential community. The corner site was earmarked for a multi-storey residential development to increase the urban density of the residential community. This became a separate development that was also designed by Cottee Parker Architects.
Parkside Plaza Mackay celebrates its tropical context by combining an adaptable, indoor / outdoor café experience with quality retail space, and provides a place for meeting, shopping and employment to West Mackay.
