Flagstone State School New Learning Centre

Flagstone State School New Learning Centre

Configured around a central amphitheatre learning space with a seated rise, the planning of the Flagstone’s New Learning Centre (NLC) centralises communal gathering spaces to maximise connectivity with the broader school campus and community.

Inspired by the raised Queenslander houses on stilts prevalent in the area, Flagstone’s New Learning Centre (NLC) building is a playful addition to the school, supporting the rapidly growing population of the area to the south-west of Brisbane.

The building is home to 6 new General Learning Areas (GLA), along with a Staff Workroom and centralized Teacher’s Preparation space. At the mid point of the building, outdoor learning spaces embrace the benefits of connecting with the outdoors, with deep verandahs, articulated shading devices, and passive design principles creating a comfortable environment for students all year round. Practical Skills specialist spaces, such as Home Economics and Art facilities, spill out to these spaces to create a dynamic learning environment.

The two storey NLC floats above a permeable ground level, configured to be a spatial mirror of the GLAs on the floor above. This spatial design provides for future-proofing, allowing for 6 additional future classrooms for the school, should an emerging need be identified.

Beyond the NLC, parking and drop and go areas are also upgraded, introducing a covered waiting area at the head of a sweeping drop off zone. This consolidation of traffic movement helps provide a formalised entry into the school.
